How to Buy Used Scanners

Scanners come in many varieties and can range from a basic, lower priced unit to one that's extravagant and high-cost. A scanner is a great tool for the home office or just to have for personal use as it allows you to do a wide range of work or craft projects.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Shop around for the manufacturer and model or style of scanner you are interested in purchasing. It is important to know what you are looking for before you start looking for it. You may want a flat-bed scanner, a handheld portable unit (for small jobs) or an all-in-one (scanner/printer/fax).
Step2
Research the options for buying a used scanner in your area, such as electronics repair shops that offer used scanners. Check online sources, too, such as CHS Computer Sales, eBay, Craigslist and Kitmondo.
Step3
Know the basic functions and features of scanners so you can check the condition and usage of the scanner when you find one you're interested in buying. There is usually a light box, cover, power cord, power button and other buttons for scanning and printing (if the scanner you are considering is also a printer). All these parts and features should accompany the scanner and be in good working condition, since parts can often be expensive or difficult to find if you need to replace them.
Step4
Check that the basic functions work between computer and scanner. If able, ask to hook it up to a computer to check for proper transferring. There should also be software, a manufacturer's manual and warranty information. Though the warranty may be expired, it is good to get the information. Perhaps you can purchase a new warranty.

Tips & Warnings

  • While Kodak offers a large variety of scanners mostly suited for home use, Canon offers a large selection of scanners for home or business use, including the Canon Scanfront 220 with touch screen.
