How to Set up mIRC to Send and Receive Files

The program mIRC is an extension of one of the very first "chat" modes of communicating called Internet Relay Chat. It's a useful program for talking with people around the world, and for sharing files from computer to computer. The process is about as simple as it can be.

1. Go the the mIRC website to download the program. Install it, following all directions, being sure to indicate that you agree to the outlined terms and conditions explained there.
2. Tell the program to launch mIRC upon installation, and, very shortly, you see a window in front of you through which you can chat with people around the world. You see, also, a variety of channels which you can join to find a group of people with whom to chat.
3. Join a channel by clicking on those listed, or invent your own channel. Often there are people chatting in thousands of channels at any one time, and the type of channel is only limited by your imagination. If you make up a channel, you have to use the # as part of the channel name. For example, if you want to talk to people from Madrid, Spain, you might join the "madrid" channel by putting "#madrid" in the channel selection box.
4. Find someone with whom to talk. You can wait for someone to find you, or you can look through the list of chatters to see who's available and whose name attracts your attention. Double-click on someone's name, and you can see a chat screen for you and that person.
5. Send that person a photo or a document or some other file by moving your cursor to the top and middle of the toolbar. The icons are pretty clear: look for the one with a manila folder and an arrow going up and to the right. Click that button.
6. Choose the file that you want to send from the browsing screens that appear. This works similarly to how it works for email attachments, so the process should be very easy and familiar from this point on.
