The snare drum is a vital part of any marching band, symphonic band or orchestra. The triplet bucks drum technique is an important one to learn and master if you plan to play your snare drum in any musical set.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the object of the triplet bucks drum exercise. This is designed to help you learn the different beats and motions to create difficult sounds. The meter of this exercise is 12-8. There will be 4 sets of 3 eighth notes in each beat.

  2. Step 2

Use the accents at 12 inches and the taps at 3 inches. That is the basic exercise. Practice it repeatedly in a slow motion to get the movement and sound down. Then you can speed it up a bit and listen to the difference in sound and the beat speed.

  3. Step 3

Combine this exercise with other snare drum exercises, like eighth note bucks, 12-3 bucks, cushion strokes and eight-on-a-hand exercises. These are all important exercises to know and master when learning to play the snare drum. It is also important to know how to correctly hold the drumstick and use it with either hand.

  4. Step 4

Know the pitfalls of this exercise. These include the problems in the timing and heights, as well as the middle stroke. Make sure the 12 cushioned 3, play it 3, and then still have enough velocity for those 2 consistent 3s, so that it does not make a decrescendo. Also, make sure the 2 strokes in the middle are the same height and the same sound consistently every single time.
