    Instructions

      • 1

Select the school you want your child to attend as soon as he/she turns 6 years old.

      • 2

Contact the local authority in the applicable area and complete an application form, either online or by mail. Be sure to apply by the deadline date (usually around November or December of each year) so that your child can be in line for placement. You can apply to up to 3 secondary schools at one time.

      • 3

Receive a letter from the local authority on or about March 1 indicating which private school placement your child has been offered. If you applied online, you may receive this notification by email.

      • 4

Check if the private school you are applying to will require your child to sit for an entrance exam that will test his knowledge in subjects such as math and English. Children who are older may be tested in science and a foreign language.

Some schools may want to interview your child and get a report from his/her current school.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Some schools have their own policies regulating admissions procedures so be sure to read the fine print.

    • You may want to contact the British Council in your country of origin for more information about how to apply to a secondary school in the U.K.

    • If a school receives more applications than it has spots available, the admissions office will enforce it's admissions criteria to determine which children are chosen for placement.

    • Children under 18 years old studying in the U.K. must have a guardian, such as a parent, friend or other family member living with them while they are studying in England.
