Skiing isn't always going downhill. You need to get from one point to another when you're in the basin or on the ski lift line. Or, maybe you want to go cross-country skiing. Follow these steps to ski on level ground.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your skis parallel to one another a little less than shoulder width. This is a position of attention.

  2. Step 2

Slide the left, unweighted ski flat on the ground in a straight forward motion. This is just like you do when you walk normally.

  3. Step 3

Keep both of your knees bent. Shift your body weight onto your advanced foot. Raise the heel of the foot that's in the rear.

  4. Step 4

Move the right ski pole forward. Place the basket close to the right ski, toward the tip of the ski. Lean the shaft to the front.

  5. Step 5

Push the ski pole to the rear to help your body move forward. Your poles will also help you ski on level ground by guiding your direction.

  6. Step 6

Do the exact same motion with the right sk--slide it forward, shift your body weight and raise the rear heel.

  7. Step 7

Increase your forward motion and glide by applying more effort to your movement. Push off the ski poles more and use a springing or lunge motion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your skis flat and parallel. Don't lift them off the snow. Instead, let the snow carry the weight of the skis.
