Irons are designed for the fairway and lefties have to move the ball from the fairway to the green in a few strokes. Since iron shots are a key part of the golf game, left-handed people need to master the essential iron techniques to play golf at the peak of their game.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Get a grip. To strike with power and finesse, a left-handed golfer needs to hold the iron properly. A good rule of thumb is to wrap the hands right over left and if you have large hands and lace the fingers if you have smaller hands. Keep the right hand flat. Extend the right thumb.
Step2
Set the proper stance. The right foot should be placed firmly ahead of the left. Offset the left foot slightly off center to give you a good follow through position.
Step3
Shift your weight to the left leg and strike hard with the iron to get more loft on the ball. Do not worry if you knock out a divot, as the irons are designed for this, but try to hit a shallow divot, as deep ones reduce the energy of the strike on the ball. Irons are designed to lift the ball, so swing in an arc that provides the greatest lift on the ball.
Step4
Position the torso for a good follow through. Left-handed golfers need to keep their left knee flexed on the backswing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an iron on the tee for a hole that is par 3. The longer shaft of the 3 iron will set the ball down near the green.
