How to Play Clarinet Styles

The clarinet boasts the largest pitch range out of all the woodwind instruments. It goes from a low E to a high C. Depending on the notes and your style of playing, a clarinet's sound ranges from dark to light. It can sound somber or happy. The clarinet is very close to the human voice when it comes to sound.

  1. Step 1

    Focus on playing legato or long flowing notes. Legato is an essential part of the clarinet's sound.

  2. Step 2

    Practice various notes for different sounds. Using the scale, start with whole notes then move to half, quarter, eighth and sixteenths.

  3. Step 3

    Change the style of your clarinet sound by varying between soft playing and loud playing. Soft notes sound soothing and melodic. By releasing more air, you're sound can become gutsy and jazz-like.

  4. Step 4

    Know that playing jazz like Dixieland requires quick note transitions. It's upbeat and fun music.

  5. Step 5

    Approach classical music more methodically. It's important to focus on each note and approach the music is a serious way.

  6. Step 6

    Play in a marching band style. It's a cross between jazz and classical.
