Doing an axel in figure skating is challenging enough. If you are left-handed, you need to learn how to do the axel in the opposite direction. Fortunately, there's help right here.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin doing a lefty axel lefty by doing some backward crossovers. Be aware of your arm position.

  2. Step 2

Lift your right leg and extend it at a 45-degree angle. Bend your left knee as you bring in your right leg and your arms toward your body.

  3. Step 3

Switch feet so that you glide on your right leg with your knee bent. Put your left leg behind you as your reach back with your arms.

  4. Step 4

Swing your left leg and your arms forward as you leap off the ice. While you're in the air, do one and a half rotations.

  5. Step 5

End the rotation of the axel for a lefty by spreading out your arms, and land on your right foot. Position your head so that it tilts to the right.

  6. Step 6

Count to five as you glide backwards on your right foot. Because of the momentum of the jump, you should be able to glide quite easily.

  7. Step 7

Practice doing a lefty axel over and over until you are able to do it smoothly. The timing is crucial, as well as the landing. You'll want to create enough momentum to get off the ground as you're doing an axel for a lefty, as well as glide after the axel is completed.
