1
Determine that your toothbrush is not too abrasive for your mouth, thereby letting the toothpaste cause pain. Try a new soft toothbrush as opposed to one with medium or hard bristles.
-
2
Try gel toothpaste instead of a paste. These might be gentler on your tongue and gums.

3
Get toothpaste made for people with sensitive teeth and gums. These can sometimes be a bit bland when it comes to taste, but probably won't hurt your mouth as much.
-
4
Go to a natural foods store or visit the healthy living section of your local grocery store and look at the natural toothpaste. These won't have so many of the harsh chemicals and abrasives that cause discomfort for many people.
-
5
Use toothpaste made for young children. Make sure you get one that has fluoride in it though, for the health and strength of your teeth.
-
6
Brush your teeth with a wet toothbrush dipped in baking soda if you can't find toothpaste that doesn't hurt your mouth using Steps 1 through 5. This will remove food and plaque from your teeth and will leave them feeling clean. Follow by using a children's fluoride rinse.

Tips & Warnings
Try to avoid foods with high acid levels, such as oranges and tomatoes. These could be burning your mouth, causing your toothpaste to make it hurt worse.
