Step 1
Go simple. Most dogs do great with a nylon or leather collar that properly fits them.
-
Step 2
Make sure you choose the right size. The collar should sit high and not be so loose it slips to the dog's shoulders. You should be able to get two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. It also shouldn't be so loose it slips over their head.
-
Step 3
Purchase a tag for your pet. Have your pet's name and your phone number on the tag, just in case something happens to them. If an animal shelter collects your dog, it will have protection as long as they have a tag with a name and number.
-
Step 4
Choose the right size leash for your pet. Obviously, small leashes are for small dogs, big leashes are for bigger dogs.
-
Step 5
Stay away from choke chain collars unless your dog trainer or vet recommends it. Choke or pronged collars are for training strong-willed dogs or dogs that have severe problems walking on a leash. If you do use a choke collar, remember it's only for short term use.
