How to Make a Runaway Horse Return

A horse that is running hell-bent for leather with a rider on his back looks like fun--in the movies, that is. When it's happening to you, it's definitely not fun. However, there are some things you can practice that will help if your horse bolts. Follow these steps and tips to learn how to make a runaway horse return to proper behavior.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Lunge your horse around in circles at least 15 to 20 minutes before getting on. Start him walking around for about ten minutes and then make him trot and canter around for another five to ten minutes. This warms him up and helps him relax.
Step2
Work the horse in an arena a lot. Practice doing one-rein stops, where you pull her around in a circle as she stops. Practice this in both directions.
Step3
Find a steep hill if you can, and turn the runaway horse toward it while you are trying to pull her head around toward your leg. If the circling action doesn't slow her down, the hill will.
Step4
Hang on with one hand if you can and pull the horse around with the other hand, sharply, if you have to. The horse can't keep running forward when you pull his head around.
Step5
Try to keep a runaway horse away from brush, trees and fences, if possible.
Step6
Don't bail off when your horse bolts, but kick your feet out of the stirrups and be prepared in case the horse would fall with you while in his bolt.

Tips & Warnings

  • These techniques will help stop a horse that is bucking, also.
  • Always ride with a friend, or have someone there to help if you need it.
  • Wear protective clothing when riding, including a helmet, long pants, and leather boots or shoes with a pronounced heel.
  • Don't panic or start screaming when your horse bolts. That will only make things worse.
