Riding a motorcycle or driving a boat at night can be a fun way to enjoy a summer evening. It can also be dangerous and increases the risks of accidents. The biggest problem is the lack of visibility on motorcycles and boats at night. A few additions or changes can make your vehicle more visible and safer to operate in the dark.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check all lights on your vehicle to ensure they work properly. Replace any dim or burnt out bulbs prior to a night ride. All your lights must visible, so make sure nothing is covering them.

  2. Step 2

Add reflective tape or decals to your vehicle to increase night visibility. A product called invisible reflective tape is invisible until light hits it. There are other decals or stickers available that add a daytime accent to your vehicle and are reflective at night for added safety.

  3. Step 3

Wear reflective gear or clothing on your person. People need to see you just as much as they need to see your vehicle. Put reflective tape on your clothes or wear clothes that are made to be reflective.

  4. Step 4

Keep a spotlight on board your boat. Many channels and bridges are marked with reflective tape, but other items, like logs and sandbars, aren't marked at all. You need to be able to scan the area around your boat to avoid obstacles.

  5. Step 5

Avoid the extreme inside or outside curves and bends to improve night visibility. Whether on the road or in the water, the smaller the vehicle, the harder it is for oncoming vehicles to see you when you're on the edge. Staying in the center increases your chances of staying within sight.
