Things You'll Need:
- 2 heads of iceberg or leaf lettuce
- 4 large tomatoes
- 3 red onions
- 1 jar pickles
- 1 jar mayonnaise
- 1 jar mustard
- Salt
- Pepper
- Oregano
- 1 bottle salad oil
- 1 bottle salad vinegar
- 4 lbs. sliced deli meat, assorted
- 4 lbs. sliced cheese, assorted
-
Step 1
Contact a submarine sandwich shop and ask about ordering a 4- to 6-foot long piece of Italian or submarine sandwich bread. Most shops have the ability to order large bread stock from their supplier. Make sure you do this at least a week before the party, as most shops need at least a few days to make the order.
-
Step 2
Prepare the vegetables for the table. Cut the heads of lettuce in half and then slice in 1/4-inch cuts. Place the shredded lettuce in a bowl at the head of the table. Slice the tomatoes thin and fan out on a plate. Thinly slice the onions and arrange on a platter with the pickles.
-
Step 3
Assemble a platter of the various deli meats. Turkey, roast beef and ham are standard items but throw in some salami, spiced Italian ham and bologna to allow your guests a selection. This is also a good place to assemble the cheese platter. Typical selections are Swiss, Provolone, American and Havarti.
-
Step 4
Collect together bowls for the condiments. These are placed at the end of the table as they are the last thing added to the sandwich. Mustard, mayonnaise, oil and vinegar all will have their own bowl and utensils for spreading. The final touch is seasonings. Salt, pepper and oregano top the perfect sandwich.
-
Step 5
Allow guests to cut a piece of bread that will satisfy their appetite. They can return again and again until they are full. Leftovers are not a problem with this meal. After the meal is finished, if there is anything left, encourage your guests to make another sandwich for the trip home.
