Fear is a natural emotion. It keeps us from walking in front of a bus or from doing something where we know the consequences aren't worth the action. However, you can overcome fears of certain things, such as a fear of skydiving. Skydiving can be a dangerous sport; however, at the instruction of a skilled professional, it could be the most exciting thing you ever do.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if your fear is actually of skydiving or if it stems from a fear of heights or perhaps a fear of falling. It could even just simply be a fear of flying.

  2. Step 2

Entice a friend to jump with you. Sometimes there is strength in numbers. Each of you can jump tandem with an instructor and have an awesome story to tell your friends.

  3. Step 3

Call several skydiving centers to get answers to your questions and concerns. When you finally find one with which you're comfortable, make an appointment for skydiving instruction. More than likely, you will jump tandem with your instructor the first few times.

  4. Step 4

Ask questions. No question you have for your skydiving instructor is stupid. This is your adventure, and it should be as comfortable as it can be. Express your fear to your instructor so, together, you can address those issues.

  5. Step 5

Remember that your instructor has many dives under his belt and is a professional. Since you're jumping tandem you're not going anywhere without him, and he's not going anywhere without you. The safety of both of you is foremost in his mind.

  6. Step 6

Watch your instructor and listen closely to his words. He will let you know what your "job" will be during the dive. Then all that's left to do is jump.

Tips & Warnings
  • There is no better way to overcome a fear than to face it head-on. After you jump and land safely, your feeling of accomplishment will stick with you for a long time.
  • Be sure to get photos and a video of your dive. You can relive the experience each time you watch it.
