Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Purchase inexpensive equipment. You'll need the basics: instruments, microphones, a tape track to record on and headphones. Save the big, expensive equipment for later after you've established yourself.
Step2
Circulate your demos around independent record labels. Artists like Ani DeFranco have created their own labels out of a need for independence or dissatisfaction with their former major labels. They may be looking for undiscovered talent to join their labels. Many bands prefer to remain completely independent, depending on self-promotion, word of mouth and their own raw talent to advance their careers.
Step3
Play at any venue wants you. Start with venues that showcase artists in your genre. Getting your name out there can be the hardest part of the process so take any gig. If no one has heard of you, play for free. The end goal is to create a buzz, so play wherever you can as much as you can.
Step4
Promote your band for airplay on college radio stations. When you play at a venue, visit local campuses in the area and put a copy of your demo into the hands of the campus radio programmer. Traditionally, college students enthusiastically support alternative and independent rock bands. If your songs get played and the students like them, you may be able to schedule an on-campus performance.
Step5
Keep your vision intact. If you dream of playing independently and having complete creative control over your music and your band, don't compromise. Some indie rock bands move on to major labels after building a following. If your records sell, you may be able to retain some creative license despite commercial pressures.
