How to Play a Tennis Tiebreaker

Tiebreakers in tennis are fraught with tension and jangled emotions. You're either on the verge of elimination or victory. To be fair to both sides, you must know how to set up and score for this suspenseful encounter.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the first serve on the ad side. Determine which tennis player serves first by figuring out who would serve the next match in regular play. That player gets one service.

    • 2

Give the next player two serves, beginning on the deuce side. After that, each player will get two serves at a time, each starting on the deuce side.

    • 3

Score a tiebreaker match differently than a regular match. In a regular tennis match, the score goes from love to 15 to 30 to 40. In a tiebreaker match, the score progresses by one point.

    • 4

Change sides each time the total score total is divisible by six points. So your first change will happen within the first six serves. The second change will happen after another six serves.

    • 5

Win the tiebreaker match by reaching a score of seven or more and beating your opponent by two points. For example, if you reach a score of 6-6, you will need two more points to win. Some tiebreaker matches in tennis are played to 10 points, which means first person to six that wins by two. Ask your match official which scoring option you will be using before you begin your tennis match.

Step one and two are incorrect. 1. Put the serve for point ONE on the deuce side (right side for server). Determine which player serves first by continuing the same rotation of the set. The player or team that was serving the game to make the set score 6-6, receives the first point of the tie break. 2. After the first point, the opposite team or player serves twice: the first on the ad side (left side for server) followed by the second on the deuce side. This rotation continues until the tie break is complete.
