String bass, also known as the double bass, is part of the string section in an orchestra or jazz combos. This large instrument is often taller than the person playing it. It can be played standing or sitting, depending on your height and the notes or chords you are using for a particular song.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Position yourself. Adjust the end pin on the bottom of the bass to make the nut level with your eyebrows. Rest the back-right edge on your left pelvic area. Place your left knee gently on the back of the bass. Your feet should be in an L shape, with your left foot parallel to the back of the bass.
Step2
Position your hands. Your left thumb goes on the back of the neck, with your left elbow held up and parallel to the floor. Your fingers should be in a claw shape, poised over the strings, without your palm touching the bass's neck.
Step3
Check that the strings are tuned with a tuning fork or electric tuner. The lowest string is E, followed by A, D and G. Become familiar with the sounds before moving on to the playing techniques.
Step4
Pick a method of playing. You can pluck the strings or use the bow. The bow is most often used with classical music, while plucking is used with jazz, blues and other contemporary forms.
Step5
Draw the bow across the strings to achieve a melodic sound or pluck the strings to provide both melody and tempo for your jazz, syncopated sound.
