If you have a child with ADHD, you may dread planning play dates. Since many ADHD children are hyperactive, you may feel wary about bringing other children around. However, your child probably craves companionship, and you can use these tactics to plan successful play dates him.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Host the play date at your home. You may not want to leave your ADHD child alone at another parent's home, especially if the child has not visited before. You can keep the situation under control if the play date is on your turf.

  2. Step 2

Keep gatherings small. Many ADHD kids get overstimulated when too many kids are around. Set up play dates with no more than two children at a time.

  3. Step 3

Set a time for the play date. It's not good to plan an open-ended play date with an ADHD child. Keep the first few play dates under 2 hours. Terminate earlier if you see that your child is becoming tired or frustrated.

  4. Step 4

Plan an activity for the play date. Give the day the structure your child needs by organizing a game or craft.

  5. Step 5

Interrupt the play date if necessary. If your child gets out of hand, try to settle him down by suggesting a snack or some separate quiet playtime.

Tips & Warnings
  • Help your child build friendships to quell any isolation she may feel.
  • Praise your child if the play date goes well. This helps build confidence and encourages good behavior for the next play date.
