How to Sell a Horse Quickly

Owning a horse is generally an expensive proposition. When the time comes to sell the animal, it's important to avoid additional expenses by finding a buyer quickly. Take the time to assemble the necessary information and market the horse properly to reduce selling time to just a few days.

1. Describe the horse in detail, including all positive and negative points, to honestly inform the potential buyer. Provide a clear, accurate photo that conveys the horse's conformation and build. Offer a second photo of the horse in action.
2. Create a video of the horse. Highlight the best features. Consider hiring a professional to create the video with narration. Upload a video clip to an online site.
3. Get the word out. Advertise online (see Resources below), in trade magazines and in newspapers. Take the horse to shows and list it for sale. Give potential buyers the opportunity to see the animal first hand.
4. Give accurate and complete background information. Give the name of the trainer, supply breeding or foal information and detail any prizes the horse has won.
5. Supply all veterinarian records, training records and information about age, shoes, loads, clips and ties. Be prepared to explain why the horse is being sold.
6. Make sure the horse is always clean and well groomed. Be ready for potential buyers at any time. Keep the horse fit with regular workouts.
7. Prepare a list of questions for potential buyers to make sure the horse is going to a good home with appropriate facilities and care. Ask about the potential buyer's experience with horses. Request references.
