You may have seen bike riders and stunt men on television and in the movies riding down flights of stairs with great ease. It looks complicated but it just takes practice. The following steps can have you riding like a professional stuntman in no time at all.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a set of stairs with 3 to 4 steps to train. Choose stairs with a clear path of at least 20 feet leading up to them.

  2. Step 2

Mount the bike. Head toward the stairs standing up, not sitting, while maintaining a consistent speed. Keep fingers on the rear brakes.

  3. Step 3

Slide up off the back of the seat to take the weight off the front wheel to allow the bike to go easily down the stairs. Lean the upper body back to avoid going over the handlebars.

  4. Step 4

Descend the stairs one at a time keeping the arms and legs bent to absorb the shock. Maintain enough speed to bring the rear wheel easily down over the stairs.

  5. Step 5

Use a similar technique for jumping. Slide off the back of the seat to relieve the weight on the front wheel. Pull up on the handlebars to lift the front wheel.

  6. Step 6

Practice on the short set of stairs until the ride is easy and smooth. Slowly increase the number of stairs descended in one trip.

  7. Step 7

Choose out of the way stairs in a remote part of a park, parking lot or building access.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take care not to ride the bike down stairs with a lot of pedestrian traffic. Always give the right-away to pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • This trick works best on a mountain bike.
  • Do not use the front brakes when doing this stunt.
