How to Do a Cheerleading Sideline Dance

Cheerleading is all about school spirit, enthusiasm and getting the crowd into the game. One of the ways cheerleaders do this is by performing a sideline dance. When the team is in timeout or on a slow play, spread out along the side of the gym or field and do a cheerleading sideline dance to rev up the fans.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab your pom-poms for your cheerleading sideline dance. Incorporate them into your routine for more attention and school spirit. Sideline dances are often short and are perfect for those impromptu cheers.

    • 2

Choreograph a short 20- to 30-second routine. This should include moves your squad can do standing in one small space--no pyramids or throws. You can and should have more than one sideline dance to create interest and keep the fans from getting bored with repetition.

    • 3

Use your arms and hips in your routine to create movement, since you can't run and cartwheel across the gym. Turn in circles, switch places with your squad mates or jump to give your routine the feel of movement.

    • 4

Dance the grapevine, shake your shoulders and poms and add moves from any type of dancing, including salsa, hip hop and reggaeton, to create your short sideline dance. If your squad has a signature move, add it to every sideline routine.

    • 5

Perform your short sideline dance during the game, during timeouts, game lulls or key game moments. Repeat it if necessary to fill time. Make sure to smile and get the crowd going. They may even dance with you.
