How to Use Old Shirts

There comes a time in every shirt's life when it's no longer fit for wearing, not even when you're home alone. Rather than throw it away or burden Goodwill with yet more old shirts, here are ways you can breathe new life into that beloved garment.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paper egg cartons or toilet paper rolls
  • Candle wax or paraffin
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread

No Cutting or Sewing Needed

Step1
Clean and dust your house. Old shirts make great rags.
Step2
Line the bottom of your plant pots to keep the soil and water from leaking out.
Step3
Dry your wet pets or yourself. Old shirts are soft on your skin and take up less space in your washing machine than towels.
Step4
Polish your jewelry, your shoes, your silverware or your glasses.
Step5
Light a fire by stuffing old shirts into empty paper egg cartons and toilet paper rolls and dripping some old candle wax or paraffin onto the shirts. Put them under your kindling or charcoal to get your fires started.
Step6
Donate your old shirts to a homeless shelter.

Some Cutting or Sewing Needed

Step1
Turn them into baby wipes. They won't have the chemicals of commercial wipes, and they'll be washable and reusable.
Step2
Create your own washable and reusable Swiffer cloth by cutting the shirt into strips.
Step3
Cover your pet's bedding by simply slipping a shirt over the pillow, or sewing it into a slipcover.
Step4
Make your old T-shirt into a tote bag. Stretch the collar to make the mouth of the bag, cut and sew the sleeves into handles. Sew the bottom closed several times until it's sturdy.
Step5
Cut and sew the shirt into a durable cover for your children's schoolbooks.
Step6
Quilt your old shirts into a wall hanging as a keepsake for your children.
