The one-handed knot trick isn't really a trick but a technique. However, if done quickly, it impresses an audience as if it were a trick. It's a great opener for a magician who plans to perform traditional rope tricks.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place a 3-foot length of rope on your hand with the center lying across your knuckles and one end dangling between your first finger and thumb.

  2. Step 2

Turn your hand vertically with your thumb on top. With your little finger, move the end of the rope next to your index finger so it dangles between your ring finger and little finger. Don't allow the dangling ends to cross.

  3. Step 3

Turn your hand back. Reach down with your index and middle fingers to grasp the other end of the rope.

  4. Step 4

Hold the end of the rope between your index and middle finger, then allow the rope to fall off your hand.

  5. Step 5

Give the rope a flick to tighten the knot. Practice until you can tie the knot so quickly that the audience can't tell how you did it.

Tips & Warnings
  • This trick work bests with a smooth, pliable length of rope. A hemp rope, for example, will not only be hard to maneuver, but may irritate your hand as you allow the rope to slide off your fingers.
  • Never perform this trick more than once or the audience may be able to figure out how it's done.
