There are three types of decorative stitching: closed stitches, open stitches and embroidery stitches. The patterns of closed stitches create solid blocks or shapes that are completely filled in by the thread. Open stitches create more complex patterns and only trace outlines. Embroidery stitches are also complex and are meant for a single embellishment. These steps will help you perform a zigzag stitch using a sewing machine and a decorative topstitch on jean pockets by hand.

Things You'll Need:

Sewing a Zig Zag Stitch Using a Sewing Machine

  1. Step 1

Rotate the wheel of the sewing machine until it stops on the "Zigzag" setting on the front of the machine.

  2. Step 2

Line up the edge of the fabric to where the needle on the machine hits. If you are placing the stitching on a hem, line up the edge of the hem to the needle.

  3. Step 3

Switch on the machine while still holding the fabric in place.

  4. Step 4

Stitch along the very edge of the hem's fabric. Make sure you keep the fabric held taut to ensure you stitch a straight zigzag design.

  5. Step 5

Turn off the sewing machine and remove the fabric.

  6. Sewing a Decorative Topstitch on Jean Pockets By Hand

  7. Step 1

Trace the pocket pattern two times on tracing paper using a fine-tipped pen.

  8. Step 2

Pin the tracing paper to the right side of each pocket.

  9. Step 3

Stitch the traced design through the tracing paper, keeping it still so you sew on the lines.

  10. Step 4

Remove the tracing paper from each pocket.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have a surger, hold the edges of your fabric tightly so that you perform a straight zigzag stitch.
  • This decorative stitching encloses your fabric so that even after you've washed it several times, the edges won't fray.
  • You can also use the zigzag stitch for appliqués, trims and various decorative stitching designs.
