How to Hook Up an iPod Car Kit

If you like to listen to your iPod library in your car, then you'll need to hook up an iPod car kit. The kit usually includes a FM transmitter and bracket to hold your iPod in place while driving.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an iPod car kit. You can pick up a version manufactured by Apple or decide to buy a cheaper, lesser known brand. Many people rely on Belkin if they choose not to get the Apple kit. Make sure the car kit you purchase for your iPod works with your model. Most universal car kits are compatible with the Nano, Mini, Video and the original iPod.

Download the software included with your kit. The software walks you through installation and allows you to register your product.

    • 3

Install the mount in your car. Your iPod car kit will include a mount to keep your device in place while driving. Most mounts are simply suction-cupped to fit on almost any location in your car.

    • 4

Plug the FM transmitter into the line output of your iPod. A FM transmitter should be included with the car kit.

    • 5

Set the output frequency. Your car kit should include at least four FM frequencies. Tune the car radio to the same frequency. Hit the play button on your iPod. If it's installed correctly, your iPod's library will start playing over the car stereo speakers.
