The butterfly stitch can be inserted into most works but looks best with plain patterns stitched in rows of single, double or triple stitches. It adds some open spaces to your work. It's an easy stitch that looks great in sweaters and shawls.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Decide where you want to insert a butterfly stitch. For the best look, butterfly stitches should be at even intervals and not too close together.

  2. Step 2

Begin with a few rows of stitches worked normally.

  3. Step 3

Start the butterfly stitch by making a chain of several stitches instead of working stitches into the previous row. The length of the chain depends on the size you want and the stitches being worked. Single stitches require shorter chains than double or triple stitches.

  4. Step 4

Skip the number of stitches equal to the length of the chain, then resume working stitches into the previous row.

  5. Step 5

Turn and work another chain in the row above. Repeat to create a third chain. Turn and work the next row to the start of the chain.

  6. Step 6

Make a chain half as long as the chains on the previous rows.

  7. Step 7

Make a loop around the three chains in the rows below from back to front. Work a single crochet to secure the loop, then make another chain half as long.

  8. Step 8

Complete the row, turn and make another chain above the butterfly stitch. Turn and work another row, this time working a stitch into each of the chains of the row before.

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending on the pattern, you can work multiple crochet stitches on top of one another to create a column of butterfly stitches.
  • When inserting butterfly stitches into garments, be careful not to place them so they expose undergarments.
