The Xbox 360 is a gaming beast, but if you cannot set it up, it functions as nothing more than a glorified doorstop. The Xbox 360 isn't terribly difficult to set up but without the instructions, the cables and components can get a little tricky. This guide will help you quickly and easily set up your Xbox 360 so you can start playing soon.

From Quick Guide: Microsoft Xbox 360 Gaming
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position your Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 can sit either vertically or horizontally allowing it to fit better into more areas. The important thing you need to consider when positioning your Xbox 360 is ventilation. It's important that your Xbox 360 stays cool so try not to put it in an enclosed entertainment center. Also make sure none of the vents are blocked and air can freely circulate around the console.

  2. Step 2

Connect the video and audio outputs to your television. The AV cable that comes with your Xbox 360 has both component and composite video along with RCA stereo audio. If you have a high-def television with component inputs, connect the blue, green and red component video outputs on the AV cable to the television. If you have a standard definition TV, connect the yellow composite video output to the television. Connect the red and white audio outputs to the audio inputs on your television. Be sure to set the switch on the AV cable to HD if you are using the component outputs.

  3. Step 3

Plug in the power supply. The power supply is the large dark gray brick. There is a cable that connects the Xbox 360 to the power supply and another cable that connects the power supply to the wall outlet. Be sure all connections are tight before you attempt to turn your console on.

  4. Step 4

Sync the wireless controller with the Xbox 360. First you need to make sure there are batteries in the controller. Next, you need to turn on your controller by pressing the Xbox Guide button in the middle and turn on your Xbox 360. Press the connect button on the Xbox 360 that is found next to the second memory card slot. Then press the connect button on the back of the controller. Both of these buttons are small, unmarked buttons. The upper left quadrant on the controller Xbox guide button should illuminate, as should the upper left quadrant on the Xbox 360 to let you know you are now player 1.

  5. Step 5

Sign up for Xbox Live. With the Xbox 360, there is a free version of Xbox Live called a Silver membership. It doesn't allow you to play games online but there is a lot of content that is available for a Silver member. You can upgrade to a Gold membership for a yearly fee that will open up all the Xbox Live options.

  6. Step 6

Insert a game and play. Once you have the console set up, you can press the eject button and place a game into the disc tray. Wait for the game to load and then play to your heart's content.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can buy AV cables that have other video connectors such as VGA and S Video. Some Xbox 360 units also have HDMI connections to enhance the HD gaming experience further.
