3. Hand over all paperwork. If there are any documents that went along with the engagement ring, they should be returned to your ex-fiancée if you have them.
4. Think about the family. If you were given a special family ring you should still return it even though it wasn't paid for by your ex. This kind of gift is priceless to the entire family and would be wrong for you to keep unless he tells you to.
5. Exchange the ring. Maybe you want to return the engagement ring to your fiancée because you don't like it. In this case handle the situation delicately and consider his feelings when you tell him you want a different one.
6. Call an attorney. If you really want to keep the ring but don't know what the law says, call to find out. Ask an attorney what the state law is and follow the rules or you could end up in court.
7. Evaluate the circumstances first. If your fiancée was abusive or cheated on you be careful when returning the engagement ring. Either bring someone along or have him meet you in a busy, public place.
