Step1
Take any topic of interest. For example, you know there was a certain battle or general in the civil war but you are fuzzy on the details. You want to know more.

Begin with a simple general search for the topic of interest. In this example, start by typing "civil war" in the Google search box.
Step3
Look over the results on the next page. You will see many pages of information relating in general to the civil war. At the bottom of page one, you will see "book results" for civil war and searches related to civil war.
Step4
Choose one of these special searches that applies to the specific topic. In this example, one result you will find is "civil war generals".
Step5
Click on the "civil war generals" link. Look over the results on the next page. At the bottom of this page you now see new results for "books" and new deep related links. Click on the result "union generals."
Step6
Select the link on the next page, "union generals of the civil war." Click here for a list of every union general who participated in the civil war. Now click the link for the general of your topic. Even if you still do not remember his name, you now have the list so go through it.
Step7
Repeat steps one through five for any general search topic. Remember to use the bottom related deep searches that Google provides to find information that is more specific. Narrow your search using the new deep related links until you find the exact topic you want.
