How to Defeat an Experienced Yu Gi Oh Duelist

Anyone taking part in a Yu Gi Oh duel the first few times will likely be overwhelmed by more experienced duelists, even if he thinks he has built the perfect deck. That's because the game is about strategy as much as it is about the cards. Experienced duelists always have a thought-out plan that you'll need to beat--here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know your opponent and the cards he plays. A good player has a deck of cards that all work together and a basic plan of action around them. You will probably have to play and lose to him at least once to find out.

  2. Step 2

Know whether to go first or not if you have the choice. If you do not have a clear plan of action from the beginning, let the opponent go first so you can plan an attack around what he plays.

  3. Step 3

Begin with magic and trap cards that will destroy your opponent's magic and trap cards. The best duelists will use these cards as part of their attack, so get rid of them quickly.

  4. Step 4

Follow up with magic and trap cards that will destroy the opponent's monsters or negate their attacks, especially the attacks of the strongest monsters. Taking out your opponent's best attack can have her playing defense the rest of the way.

  5. Step 5

Special summon monsters when you can, so you'll get multiple monsters on the field. Better yet, play effect monsters that will counter an opponent's attack, like destroying the monster, negating the attack or summoning another.

  6. Step 6

Have a backup plan. If your first plan of attack is ruined with your best monster destroyed, you need to quickly set up a new attack with your other monsters and spells.

  7. Step 7

Get your opponent on the defensive first. Most duel winners have their opponent summoning monsters just to protect their life points and eventually wear them down.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to declare every move you make in the duel, and make sure the opponent does the same. Some duelists try to overwhelm the opposition and gain an unfair advantage by not declaring everything.
  • Don't play every one of your most powerful monsters, spells and traps all at once. An experienced duelist will play a card that can destroy everything at once, and then you'll be in trouble.

Position, then flip the card face-up. if it has 2000 or lower def points, destroy it. If it has higher, return it in face-down position.
That's all for now. Thanks!

on 8/16/2008 True. Some cards I recommend, though some are banned:
- Different Dimension Portal: negates opponent's attack and removes the monster from play
- Trap Hole: destroy a Special Summoned/Flip Summoned/Summoned monster
- Black Pendant: the equipped monster gains 500 ATK. If this card is sent to the graveyard, -500 LP from opponent
- Axe of Despair: raise 1000 ATK. you can tribute one monster to have this card on the top of your deck again
- Ebikyo Drakemond (sp?): the equipped monster cannot attack and is destroyed in 2 turns. This card returns to your hand when its job is done
- Fairy Box: when your opponent attacks, flip a coin. if its heads, negate attack. if tails, ignore this card.
- Mirror Force: you all know what it does :D
- Dark Mirror Force: destroy all defense position monsters instead
- Acid Trap Hole: if a monster is Summoned/Special Summoned/Flip Summoned in face-down
