How to Reset a Vista Password

To ensure the highest level of security, most software requires the use of passwords. With a password required for just about everything, it can be difficult to remember them all. If you have forgotten your password to Windows Vista, learn to reset it with a reset disk or an administrator account.

Instructions

    Reset With a Reset Disk

  1. Step 1

    Recognize the error message. When you type the wrong password, you receive a message that says "Your password or user name is incorrect."

  2. Step 2

    Click "OK."

  3. Step 3

    Click "Reset Password."

  4. Step 4

    Complete the instructions that follow. Windows Vista prompts you through the password resetting process.

  5. Reset With an Administrator Account

  6. Step 1

    Log in to your administrator account.

  7. Step 2

    Click the "Start" button to open your Local Users and Groups.

  8. Step 3

    Type "lusrmgr.msc" into the search box. Click "Enter."

  9. Step 4

    Type the administrator password and confirmation, if prompted to do so.

  10. Step 5

    Double click on "Local Users and Groups."

  11. Step 6

    Click on "Users."

  12. Step 7

    Locate the account for the password you need to reset. Right-click on the account and select "Set Password."

  13. Step 8

    Type your new password.

  14. Step 9

    Retype your new Windows Vista password to confirm it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you forget your Windows Vista password and you are on a domain, contact your administrator. Only she can reset the password for you. The above actions only work only if you have administrator privileges.
  • If you use the administrator option to reset your password, be you lose all email messages and encrypted files on the account. You also lose stored passwords for websites that you frequent.

on 4/8/2009 If you don't want to reset your windows password successly,you can choose windows password reset software,for example, Windows Password Reset. It doesn't have some limits and is not harm to your messages in your computer!
