Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Milk
  • Powdered sugar
  • Food coloring in colors of your choice

    Make the Cookies

  1. Step 1

    Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Step 2

Put the the flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl and stir it to mix. Set aside.

  3. Step 3

Beat the sugar, butter and shortening in a large mixing bowl at medium speed until the mixture is creamy. Decrease the mixer speed to low, and blend in the flour mixture, alternating with milk and ending with flour. Beat until the mixture is well blended, and then allow the dough to sit for 2 hours.

  4. Step 4

Place the cookie dough on a floured surface and roll the dough to a large circle, about 1/4-inch thick. Cut the dough into circular shapes with a cookie cutter, biscuit cutter or open end of a drinking glass.

  5. Step 5

Put the cookies on an oiled cookie sheet, and insert a lollipop stick into each one. Bake the cookies on the center rack until done, about 18 to 20 minutes. Cool the cookies on a wire rack.

  6. Step 6

Frost the cooled cookie puppets as desired, and create faces with assorted candies.

  7. Frosting

  8. Step 1

Place the powdered sugar in a bowl and add a very small amount of milk.

  9. Step 2

Mix the ingredients, adding additional milk if necessary. The frosting should thicken, but should still be thin enough to drip off a spoon.

  10. Step 3

Divide the frosting into small batches and color each batch with food coloring, as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Provide a variety of candies to create fun faces for the puppets, such as peppermint candy eyes, licorice string hair or gummy worm lips.
