How to Buy THX-Certified Surround Sound Speakers
THX is one of the entertainment industry's leading special effects companies. In addition to their work on feature films and movie theaters, they also certify a variety of multimedia products for home use, among which are surround sound speakers. A number of different companies producing top-end speakers have gained THX's approval, and though their products come at a high price, they're extremely reliable and deliver crisp, resonant sound.

1
Figure out what kind of surround sound speaker setup your room can accommodate. Generally, THX-Certified systems come in either 5.1 or 7.1 varieties, meaning you'll need space in your room for at least six speakers (subwoofer included).
-
2
Make note of the audio and video outputs your DVD player, TV and computer have. Most speakers carry a wide enough range of ports to handle most inputs, but you'll need to double-check the speaker jacks if your equipment has ones that are more rare, such as HDMI.

3
Use the THX-Certified Product Finder to see a list of surround sound systems that have won their approval. Some of the speakers listed are old and might not be available, but these often sell for the lowest prices.
-
4
Visit the homepages of top PC audio companies like Logitech and Creative Labs and browse through their collection of products. Both companies produce at least two major THX-Certified systems with comparable performance capabilities.
-
5
Decide on a wired or a wireless system. The wireless speakers currently run on the 2.4 GHz frequency, so they can experience interference from other wireless devices. Wired systems, however, will usually clutter your room.
