How to Buy Used Scuba Diving Equipment

Scuba diving equipment can be extremely expensive, and unless you live on the coast or near your desired diving location, you will not be using it often enough to warrant the high cost. Find used scuba diving equipment by asking the right questions and looking in the right places.

Instructions

    • 1

Research scuba diving equipment--if you are not already familiar with the basics--to figure out which pieces you need. The basic starter set-up includes a regulator, octo, wet suit, mask, fins, gauges, BC and tanks. Make a list of the items you are interested in so you have it on hand when shopping.

    • 2

Make a list of the places to find used scuba diving equipment. This could include garage and estate sales, online auctions and selling sites, scuba equipment repair shops and the local classified ads. If ordering online, ask for a detailed description and pictures before purchasing.

    • 3

Contact the places on your list and look for the equipment you listed in Step 1. It is best to try and find the scuba equipment all together, as you will likely get the same condition, lower shipping fees, and the same brand. If you find a couple of pieces from one seller, don't be afraid to ask if they have something else off your list or know someone who is selling the other items you are looking for.

    • 4

Ask for a warranty or guarantee of some kind. While you are not likely to get a manufacturer's warranty, you can ask for a set amount of time to assess if there is any damage to the equipment and that it is all up to current safety standards as set by the Scuba Diving and Dive Safety Association.
