Step1
Price out new equipment. You won't know if you're getting a good deal or getting ripped off unless you have an idea about what new equipment costs. It's also not a bad idea to do some comparison shopping on used equipment as well.
Step2
Make sure the used recreational equipment is the right size for the person who will be using it. Depending on the equipment you're looking for, size and fit may be an important consideration. For things like skis, skates or bikes, know the correct size that the person needs and measure the item before buying.
Step3
Inspect the items for damage and wear. Although some wear is to be expected on used items, you don't want to buy something only to have it break right away or not work right. If the item needs power, be sure that you plug it in to test that it works before taking it home.
Step4
Try the item out if you can. If you're buying a bike, take it for a ride or take a few swings with a golf club. This can alert you to potential problems in the way the item feels and operates. A used equipment store may allow you to return items, but if you buy from an individual, you probably won't have this option.
Step5
Take advantage of trading programs. Some used equipment stores have programs where you can trade the items in each year for a different size. This is a great option for families with children who will need new sizes of equipment each year as they grow.
