Purchasing used equipment presents a specific set of challenges to the paintball enthusiast. You face the challenge that buyers of any used equipment encounter, such as missing or broken parts, as well as the additional challenge of purchasing a projectile weapon. Take great care when purchasing used paintball guns--also called markers--both with the seller and the equipment.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

    Search

  1. Step 1

Check with the manufacturer and review sites such as Paintball Review, to ensure that the specific type of marker you are looking at meets your needs. Make sure you know what manufacturing years have the features you need (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Search Internet paintball classified ad sites. Many sites devote themselves to selling used paintball supplies, such as Paintball Classifieds and Trade My Gun (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Browse Internet auctions. Auction sites such as eBay and Amazon generally have a great quantity of used paintball markers listed.

  4. Step 4

Peruse the local newspaper classified ads. Most often, paintball guns can be found in the Sports Equipment categories.

  5. Step 5

Contact regional paintball associations. Your local paintball team serves as a great resource for finding used equipment. You can reach them through your local paintball equipment distributor, or through any Co2 or High Pressure Air (HPA) tank refill or distribution center.

  6. Watch out for Fraud

  7. Step 1

View the gun before you hand over the money. Demand a photo of the actual product you are purchasing next to a dated object, such as a daily newspaper. Don't settle on a factory photo. Look over the gun to verify that it is in the condition which was expressed in the ad.

  8. Step 2

Insist on a phone number. Get as much contact information for the seller as possible. Speak to them on the phone. Don't send money to people, especially overseas, with whom you do not feel 100 percent comfortable.

  9. Step 3

Use an escrow service for payment. Escrow services allow you to send money to a seller through a third party. The seller will be assured of receiving their payment as soon as you have received the marker.

  10. Step 4

Test the gun upon purchase. When purchasing locally, arrange to try out the marker. Run an entire tank of air or a couple of hoppers of paint. Many guns can fire a few shots without error, but will then lock up or start shooting intermittently.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are purchasing an item off the Internet, view as many photos of it as possible. Well-cared-for markers will be scratched, and show some wear marks around the grip and barrel, but should not show excessive wear in other areas.
  • Complete a value comparison of equitable used markers to ensure your not paying to much.
  • Don't purchase from completely unknown sources without seeing the item in question. Typically, once a used item is purchased, it can't be returned.
