File cabinets are a great way to organize all of your important papers into one location where you can find everything easily. Brand-new file cabinets direct from an office supply store can be very expensive. You can sometimes save yourself quite a bit of money if you buy a used file cabinet instead, especially if you're not concerned about a file cabinet with a designer appearance.

1. Determine the amount of space you have available for your used file cabinet. This will probably require measuring the space, especially if you don't have a lot of leeway for positioning. Remember to take the measurements with you when you shop.

2. Set your budget. Depending on what you're willing to pay, you may need to lower your standards a little. If you're buying a used filing cabinet, you're not going to have as much selection as you would if you were to buy new.

3. Visit your local thrift stores. You may need to visit the same locations several days in a row for an extended period of time. People are always looking to buy used filing cabinets, so they tend to sell quickly. You'll want to be there first, if you can.
