Step 1
Buy from a reputable, knowledgeable retailer. The person who sells you the binoculars should answer all your questions about them and quote a fair price. Research prices of new models ahead of time.
-
Step 2
Know what activities you plan to do with your binoculars. For instance, avid birders want binoculars with a higher magnification number so they can view faraway birds in detail. However, many users find it difficult to keep an image steady at a magnification of 8.5 or higher.
-
Step 3
Choose waterproof binoculars if you boat, bike, hunt or hike. They resist repeated changes in temperature and humidity, which makes it impossible for condensation to damage their internal parts.
-
Step 4
Consider your comfort. Most people want lightweight binoculars, but decide the importance of size, as well. If you plan to use your binoculars when you travel, smaller is probably better.
-
Step 5
Ask about coatings. The best binoculars are fully multi-coated, which means that all glass surfaces are coated to reduce the amount of light reflected (reflection reduces visibility). Next best is multi-coated which means that one of more of the glass surfaces are coated to reduce light refraction.

Step 6
Examine the used binoculars carefully. Scratch-free lenses and a case without dents or dings indicate a good buy.
