How to Buy a Used Fax Machine

Fax machines came into use in the late 1980's and have changed the way we communicate by offering transition of documents in minutes through our phone lines. Fax machines can be expensive, especially for a small or new business or household. Buy a used fax machine to save money.

Research fax machines to find the features and brands you are interested in. Some fax machines also have a phone handset on them to be used as a phone when not in use for faxing. There are also combo machines with print, scan, copy and fax options all in one machine.

Make a list of the places to find used fax machines. This could include garage and estate sales, electronics retailers and repair shops, second hand stores and online auctions and sellers. Make a note of shipping or delivery costs when comparing prices online and in person.

See that the item works. It may be difficult to ensure a fax can be received and sent out, but at least make sure the power turns on and the cords and other components are in good condition. Make sure the ink cartridges are not obsolete and other parts are still available, if needed.

Ask for a warranty or guarantee. When buying used equipment, it is not likely you will get a manufacturer's warranty, but ask the seller for at least a 30-day guarantee to bring the fax machine back if there is unforeseen damage or faxes can't be sent or received. Get this agreement in writing before cash exchanges hands.
