Step 1
Recognize a star by the presence of a white mark on the horse's forehead, often just above the eye line. A star can come in a variety of shapes; the key factor is that it doesn't run down the nose.
-
Step 2
Find a snip by looking for white between the horse's nostrils. Like the star, it can be in any shape provided it doesn't run up the nose.
-
Step 3
Point out a strip by finding a long, thin white strip running straight down the horse's nose. A strip can also connect to other markings, such as the star or snip.
-
Step 4
Spot a race by looking for a wavy line running down the length of the nose. A strip is always straight, while a race is always curvy.
-
Step 5
Identify a blaze by finding a wide white swath running down the face. A strip is narrow, whereas a blaze is at least an inch wide.
-
Step 6
Classify a bald face horse, sometimes known as an apron face, by the presence of a predominantly white face. The white marking must cover the length of the nose while also being wide enough to meet the inner corners of the eyes. A bald face commonly joins a wide snip covering most of the nostril area.
