Step 1
Find at least seven players. If you have at least seven players, you can play a game which at least closely resembles a regulation football game.
-
Step 2
Designate one player as a floater. If you only have seven players, or if you have any odd number of players, one player will have to play on both teams. The floater must be an offensive player because otherwise it will be too easy to sack the quarterback.
-
Step 3
Give the offense a quarterback and at least one offensive lineman. To advance the ball you'll need at least one running back or one wide receiver. The fourth offensive player can be a second wide receiver or running back or an additional offensive lineman.
-
Step 4
Start the defense with at least one defensive lineman. One of the remaining two players needs to be a linebacker, defensive back or safety to guard against wide receivers and running backs. The final defensive player can be an additional defensive lineman, a linebacker, a defensive back or a safety.
-
Step 5
Add extra players if you have them. Any additional players to the basic seven can be added in at any position.
-
Step 6
Change a few other rules to make up for the lack of a regulation field. If you're playing football with few players, you probably also lack a 100 yard field with yard markings. Create a rule which states a first down occurs when two passes are completed before four downs are up. Mark the endzone area with cones.
