How to Register a User Name on Freenode

Freenode is an online community that allows you to discuss and share anything from ideas to software. It is mainly used by groups to collaborate on projects pertaining to the web. To use the community, you're going to have to register a user name.

Instructions

    • 1

Join Freenode by opening an IRC Client and typing "/server irc.freenode.net".

    • 2

Decide on a username and type "/nick username" in your IRC Client, where "username" is the nickname you've decided to use for Freenode.

    • 3

Register the name by asking the client to approve it. Type "/msg nickserv register your_password", where "your_password" is a password of your choosing.

    • 4

Register an email address by typing "/msg nickserv set email your_email_address", where "your_email_address" is your email address. It should be changed.

    • 5

Set up your IRC Client to automatically recognize your username by making your nickserv password and server password the same.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's smart to create an alternate nickname just in case something happens to your original. Most people just add an underscore to their alternate nickname. To register an alternate nickname, follow the same steps as before. Then link the nicknames together (so they work with the same email and password) by typing this command: "/msg nickserv link primary_nick (your username) your_password (your password)".

  • You can set up your IRC Client to automatically recognize your username. Do this by making your nickserv password and server password the same.

  • While changing your email, you should hide it from other users by first typing "/msg nickserv set hide email on". The continue to with the instructions on changing the email address.

  • You can't use Freenode unless you have an IRC Client. Do an Internet search to choose an IRC Client that is right for your use.

  • Nicknames expire or can be claimed by other users if they're not used for 60 consecutive days.
