Rolling in on a BMX, also called dropping in, is an essential skill for getting into a halfpipe or a bowl. It's one of the fundamentals a BMX rider must know to progress to more difficult tricks.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a bike park with a quarter pipe that stands no more than 5 feet. Many skate parks have times when BMX bikers can ride and and great spaces for riders to practice.

  2. Step 2

Ride your bike to the decking. Start from a side with wider decking. As you get better at your roll-ins you can try slimmer deckings and higher quarters.

  3. Step 3

Place your bike horizontal to the coping of the quarter. You want to start at one end of the ramp. This is where having the space will help you. Roll slowly forward at a 45-degree angle toward the coping while you turn into the drop.

  4. Step 4

Lean into the drop as you continue rolling. Lean the top of your body over the ramp. You have to be confident and committed at this point, because there's no turning back.

  5. Step 5

Increase your strength into the drop in with a final slight push of your pedal. Turn your handlebars slightly as you drop in, so that you straighten out while traveling down the ramp.

  6. Step 6

Keep your angle for the first few seconds. If you drop straight in, you'll hit your bike and fly over your handle bars. Pull back on your lean as you fall farther into the ramp. At first, you may slide or fall in while attempting to find perfect the speed and angle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear a helmet and pads when practicing the BMX roll in.
