Walking home alone is one of the rites of passage that every kid eventually seeks from their parents. Convincing parents that a child is old enough to walk home alone will depend on the level of trust and maturity that the child has.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Demonstrate enough maturity to make parents feel at ease with your walking home alone. You have to convince them that you can handle yourself in a variety of situations and will be able to keep yourself safe from danger.

  2. Step 2

Talk about what you would do if confronted with an aggressive stranger. Know all of the emergency and medical numbers. You might make a list of all the possible dangers followed by a detailed account of what you can do to protect yourself. This will show your parents that you have put a lot of thought into walking home alone and have the maturity to make tough decisions.

  3. Step 3

Build up trust with your parents by keeping your word and showing them that you can be trusted to do the things you commit to doing. This will show them that you are someone who can be trusted when you are without supervision.

  4. Step 4

Be persistent. Parents often get so many requests that they don't know which ones you are the most serious about. If walking home alone is something that you really want, ask often so that the idea stays in their minds. Just don't ask so often that it seems like pestering, which is a sign of immaturity. Bring it up about once or twice a week so they understand how important it is to you.
