How to Modify Authorized Addresses for an IRC Nickname With Nickserv

The Internet Relay Chat (IRC) service Nickserv allows you to claim and manage ownership of one or more personal nicknames. Instruct Nickserv to remove other users who try to use your nicknames from the IRC network. It's simple to modify athorized addressess with IRC.

        Log on to the IRC network and change to the nickname you wish to register. Register your nickname, or if you've already registered, identify yourself to Nickserv using your password.

        Review the access masks already created for your current nickname using the ACCESS LIST command. Query Nickserv with /msg Nickserv ACCESS LIST. Nickserv returns a list of access masks in the form of username and host mask. It shows the addresses that already have access to your nickname.

        Add a new authorized address using the ACCESS ADD command. Contact Nickserv on via the IRC server using the command /msg Nicksev ACCESS ADD username host mask, to the address you wish to add as an authorized user of your nickname.

        Review the list of authorized addresses periodically to update addresses or remove addresses you no longer use. Use the ACCESS LIST command to review the authorized address list.

        Remove addresses you no longer need listed using the ACCESS DEL command. Determine the address you want removed, and then /msg Nickserv ACCESS DEL username and host mask, in the field. Use the exact mask displayed to you nick Nickserv when you used the ACCESS LIST command.

    • Syntax for communicating with Nickserv may vary. The syntax above is for the IRC Services version. On most networks, you can send a message to Nickserv with just the word "help" to receive a list of Nickserv commands.

    • Including your address in the authorized addresses access list enables you to circumvent the protections set on your own nickname, before you have given Nickserv your nickname password.
