How to Backup an iPod With iDump
Apple somewhat sneakily designed the iPod so that you can't transfer music directly from it to your computer. Thankfully for those of us wishing to backup our music, a few even sneakier programmers came up with a wonderful solution to this problem. IDump, a free utility for Windows XP and Vista, quickly and easily transfers music from your iPod to your hard drive.

1
Download and install iDump. The installer's smaller than 1MB, so it should download in next to no time.
-
2
Launch iDump by finding and clicking on its iPod-shaped icon in the "Programs" folder of the Start Menu. There might also be a shortcut on your desktop, depending on the options you selected during installation.
-
-
3
Wait for iDump to process the music on your iPod and display it on the main program screen. This can take up to a few minutes for iPod Classics carrying around dozens of gigabytes of music.
-
4
Organize the tracks by title, artist or album to make finding the ones you want to transfer easier.
-
5
Open the "Output Options" tab and select the directory where you want iDump to copy the music.
-
6
Head back to the "iPod" tab and select the songs you want to backup. If you're doing a complete backup of your iPod, right-click one of the tracks and choose "Select All."
-
7
Press the "Start Copy" button near the top right corner of the main program screen to transfer the selected tracks.
