Hypnobirthing is a method used to cope with the pain of labor and delivery without drug intervention. A safe and effective alternative to traditional coping mechanisms, learn to teach hypnobirthing techniques properly.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Train to become a hypnotherapist. Locate a hypnotherapy school in your area or take online courses to become a hypnotherapist. Become certified by the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners. Between 200 and 300 hours of course study are required for certification.

  2. Step 2

Offer private sessions or teach classes on hypnobirthing techniques. Open your own practice to control when classes are offered or partner with a local hospital to work with patients.

  3. Step 3

Concentrate your hypnobirthing sessions on self hypnosis, guided imagery and breathing techniques to help relax your patients during labor and delivery. Explain that when followed properly, these techniques help to eliminate the normal fears associated with the labor and delivery experience.

  4. Step 4

Encourage clients to choose an imagery to focus on that offers comfort and is familiar. Soothing images like green rolling meadows with colorful flowers or gently flowing stream glistening in the sun conjure relaxing feelings. During the birth, suggest that the client visualize the baby traveling down the birth canal and being born to motivate and focus the mother during birth.

  5. Step 5

Teach breathing techniques that are controlled and that use deep breathes taken in slowly and blown out slowly. Controlled breathing is key to relaxing the body and encourages blood flow to the uterus which can ease cramping during contractions.

  6. Step 6

Use words to describe the labor and delivery process that are calming. Substitute "surge" for "contraction" and "sensation" for the word "pain" to erase the fears associated with those words.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always inform students the hypnobirthing techniques won't eliminate all of the pain and discomfort associated with labor and delivery. The methods taught help to cope with the discomfort.
