A member of the brass family of instruments, the tuba makes the strong sound that resonates in band performances. As tuba playing requires appropriate breathing and finger technique for optimal sound, it also needs to be properly tuned. Learn how to tune a tuba to produce quality music.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Understand that there are different types of tubas based on the number of valves on the instrument. Three and four-valve tubas are the most common. Each valve is connected to corresponding tuning slide.
Step2
Play your tuba and listen as you push down each valve. You can listen for the proper notes that correspond to each valve. Use the tuning slides to change the pitch or to tune each valve.
Step3
Tune the first valve. Push the valve button in while you blow air. As you blow, slowly move the corresponding tuning slide out and listen for the change in pitch. The farther out you pull the tuning slide, the lower or flatter the pitch becomes because your air has more tubing to move through. Bring the slide in to create sharp or high-pitch notes.
Step4
Follow the procedure for the remaining valves until you achieve the right pitch for each valve. If your tuning slides are difficult to move, grease each slide with special grease to lubricate for easy moving.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your tuba clean for optimal playing. Monthly or when needed, remove the valves and mouthpiece and use warm water with mild soap to clean your instrument.
  • Always keep the valve pushed down while you tune your tuba to avoid pumping air into your instrument. Excessive forced air can damage your instrument over time.
