A dancer's most important tool is her feet. For this reason, buying the right dance sneakers is far from being a matter of style or even comfort, but a critical part of performance and injury prevention.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a reliable dance sneaker outlet that carries a range of dance sneaker brands such as Bloch, Capezio, Roch and Wear Moi shoes. The important thing to look for from a dance sneaker retailer is that they can help you figure out the sizing of shoes, based on your regular shoe size, especially if you're buying a pair of dance sneakers for the first time.

  2. Step 2

Look at the Block DRT1, which is a bestselling dance sneaker that the majority of dancers who dance on the shoe find to be an excellent choice. The sneaker has a relatively high and stiff arch so make sure that you try on the Block DTR1 and try a few dance steps before you buy them.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the outsole of the dance sneaker is non-marking and has a good balance between grip and slip on a variety of common dance floor surface types. You can read about the shoes to find out if they're non-marking or not or when you try them on you can kick the sole against a light colored surface to see if they leave a dreaded scuff mark.

  4. Step 4

Check to see if the sneakers you're looking at are articulated at parts of the foot that experience lots of bend when dancing so that gapping doesn't occur between your foot and the shoes; this can lead to poor performance and even injury.

  5. Step 5

Find out the weight of the shoes which is extremely important when you dance. Hold two different brands or models in either hand to compare weights, or simply put the shoes on and see if they weigh you down or make you feel light as a feather.
