How to Get Ready for a Semi-Formal Date

Sometimes the biggest challenge to getting ready for a semi-formal date is defining "semi-formal." Take note of where you're going on the date, and if it's possible, go to that place beforehand to see what the people there are wearing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose your clothing for the date first. Pick fabrics such as silk, satin and velvet for semi-formal dresses and women's dress suits. Gabardine and wool are good fabric choices for men's suits.

  2. Step 2

Pick a dress length that you're comfortable wearing. A hem for a semi-formal dress can extend all the way down to 2 inches above the ankle.

  3. Step 3

Wear a full suit, not just a sport coat, if you're a man. A full suit includes a matching jacket and pants, a dress shirt and tie.

  4. Step 4

Remember to style your hair to suit the occasion, which may include getting a haircut or abandoning more casual styles such as ponytails.

  5. Step 5

Select accessories that complement your outfit. For example, a woman who wears a satin dress should also wear satin shoes or some other dress shoe. If you choose to wear a watch on your semi-formal date, the one you wear to work every day may not be suitable, unless it's on the dressier side.

  6. Step 6

Be mindful of any cologne or perfume you may wear on your semi-formal date. Keep it subtle. People who are sensitive to smells or have sinus and allergy problems don't respond well to overpowering scents.
